Slobodan Milošević (20th of August 1941 – 11th of March 2006) In the morning hours of 11th of March 2006, Slobodan Milošević was found dead in his cell in The Hague. He was 64 years old.
Slobodan Milošević was born in Požarevać in eastern Yugoslavia. His father was an orthodox cleric and his mother was a schoolteacher. His childhood was difficult and hard, because his father left when Slobodan was still just a child. Slobodan and his brother, Borislav, were alone with their mother, who worked hard to support her two children. Slobodan met the girls of his life, Mira Marković in high school and they were together ever since. Slobodan soon became a member of the communist party, as young revolutionary people did at that time. He began to study law at the university of Belgrade. He began climbing up the party ladder and after he finished law school, he went on working with his politically influential friend Ivan Stambolić at Tehnogas. Later he left that job to become a very popular banker in Beogradska Banka. Slobodan was elected chief of the Serbian communist party. After his takeover of the Serbian presidency in 1990, he became the president of Yugoslavia. He was the leader of Serbia, when the country went through three devastating wars, which changed the face of the Balkans forever. In 2001 he was sent to The Hague indicted for war crimes, and he defended himself against these indictments for four years. Slobodan Milošević is survived by his wife, Mira Marković, his daughter, Marija, and his son, Marko.
